About the Book

“A drought in my vagina, no one could tell from my silence

how long the clouds have held no rain.”

— Garima (Dignity)

Mohabiswa Jorayur Bhetor looks at the world from within a woman’s body. The woman is not observed from the outside. She speaks for herself. About her body. Desire. Motherhood. Love. Rejection. Wounds. And the questions she carries.

The body bleeds. It desires. It remembers. It is hurt. It also knows pleasure. The same body that carries a child can desire, refuse and question the terms placed upon it. Those questions do not remain private. They reach into family, love, marriage, social ideas of propriety, religious rules and inheritance. Personal experience meets the society around it.

But the book is not only about anger. There is love here. The desire for touch. Betrayal and separation. There is also the attempt to return to oneself. A woman can be a lover, a mother and a person in her own right. These selves exist beside one another.

And through all of this, the womb keeps returning. Sometimes as a memory of blood. Sometimes as desire. Sometimes as motherhood. Sometimes as a place where society tries to control a woman’s body. Gradually, the womb moves beyond the body itself. It becomes an image of birth and creation.

This is where the title comes from—Mohabiswa Jorayur Bhetor (The Universe Inside the Womb.)

Before we enter the world, we live inside another body. Our first darkness. First shelter. First water. First pulse. All within the womb. A human world begins there. From that first place to the world outside, the many things left unspoken in between become the ground of these poems.

Author’s Note

I have never yet consciously published any feminist poetry, this is first. In this collection of 70 poems I was looking for a language for my own experience rather than trying to explain women.

There are many rules around women in our society. There are many rules around our bodies too. But there is very little space to talk about how that body is doing, what it feels at the different turns of life. I tried to explore what it actually feels like to live in that body.

Menstruation. Sexuality. Desire. Motherhood. Inequality within marriage. Rejection. The right to one’s own body. Women are often taught to remain silent about these things. Sometimes we have to speak about them in a language made by others. I wanted to change the language of that silence.

Some poems came from anger. Some from love. Some from betrayal and wounds. Others came from my experience of children and motherhood. Sometimes it's harsh language. Sometimes a bare body. I didn't want to make those places polite. I left them as they were.
