Book Description

Jolporan

Amina Shelly

Poetry · Nature & Roots · Bangla

Poems of water, earth, and returning.

At a Glance

Jolporan is Amina Shelly’s first poetry collection. Across 64 poems, it explores love, separation, childhood, nature, and the pull of one’s own land. Rivers, haors, paddy fields, rain, and village roads merge with personal feelings and memories.

About the Book

A first book. So there is a natural rawness to it. A sense of searching, too. Within it are early glimpses of some of the features that would later become more distinctive in Amina Shelly’s poetry.

Nature and personal feelings often sit side by side. At times, they become one. Rivers, water, fields, trees, mist, rain are not simply scenery, they carry love, separation and memories. The longing to return to one’s own land.

In Grameen Prithibi, childhood, adolescence, and youth merge with the homeland. In Brikkhobondhu, a long-lost mango tree becomes a marker of childhood and of time gone by.

Jolporan may be rendered in English as Water-Soul. The name carries a sense of life, softness and emotional innocence—and something fluid and vulnerable. It also hints at memory, longing, belonging, and the natural world. Throughout the collection, water is more than a recurring image. It becomes a reflection of the poet’s inner life.

Another important current is distance. The longing to return home. Poems such as Ghorphera Nishshash and E Kushiyara Dheuyer Moncho carry the experience of living away. Along with the enduring pull of village, rivers, and familiar landscapes.

There are experiments with language and imagery. Attempts to place personal memories and feelings within the natural world. To turn water, earth, and the seasons into poetic symbols. In Amina Shelly’s later work, these take on broader, more coherent and mature forms.

In this sense, Jolporan marks the beginning of her poetic journey. The beginning of finding her own language. And the early shaping of a poetic world of her own.
